FAQ - Licensing & Usage
(Deshima Music / Deshima Sessions)
Contact: management@deshima-music.com
## Quick primer: What does “licensing” mean?
A license is permission to use music legally - e.g., in a film, an ad, a podcast, or a trailer.
You’re not “buying the music forever.” You’re securing defined usage rights such as media, term, territory, and scope (depending on the license).
## 1) What’s Deshima Music vs. Deshima Sessions?
Deshima Music is the label and operational hub.
Deshima Sessions is the producer-led creator network behind the catalog - producers and session players who contributed to these releases.
Important: We focus on ready-made, release-ready catalog music that can be licensed.
We do not offer “brief in, song out” commissioned work.
## 2) Who is this for?
Anyone who needs music cleared for professional use, including:
- Music supervisors, production companies, editors
- Brands, agencies, marketing teams
- Publishers/labels (catalog scouting; artist releases by arrangement)
- Creators/podcasters (depending on the partner license model)
## 3) What can I license?
A curated selection of finished tracks (songs and instrumentals) suitable for:
- Film / TV / Documentary
- Trailer / Promo
- Advertising / Campaigns
- Online video / Social
- Podcasts
- Games / Apps
(Exact coverage depends on the license you select with the partner.)
## 4) Where do I license your music?
Standard licenses are handled through our licensing partners:
- Songtradr
- Pond5
- AudioJungle (Envato)
## 5) How does licensing work in practice?
You preview a track, choose your intended use, and complete the license through the partner’s flow.
Some partners calculate the final price via a guided licensing wizard and then take you straight to checkout.
## 6) Where do I see pricing?
Short answer: where you license.
Pricing and license options are shown inside the partner’s licensing/checkout process, based on your intended use.
For special cases (e.g., exclusivity, unusually large reach, or non-standard rights), terms are typically handled case-by-case.
## 7) Who actually issues the license?
Standard licenses are issued by the partner platform (Songtradr, Pond5, AudioJungle).
Special cases are handled by written agreement.
## 8) What does “rights cleared” mean - and what proof do I get?
“Rights cleared” means you receive a license/confirmation for the agreed use. That helps reduce issues like takedowns, claims, or unclear rights - **as long as you use the music within the exact scope of the license.**
Your partner checkout provides the license/receipt. If you need a one-page proof document for stakeholders, email us your track link + project name.
## 9) Can I use a track in advertising, paid social, or campaigns?
Yes - **if** the license you choose covers that use. Some licenses allow commercial/advertising usage; others are limited to certain channels or distribution types. Always select the correct intended use in the partner checkout.
## 10) Can I use a track in film/TV/trailers?
Yes - **if** the selected license covers it. Some platforms offer clear license tiers depending on distribution and medium.
## 11) Can we use the same track across multiple channels, edits, or influencer cutdowns?
Often yes - **if your license scope covers that distribution** (media, paid vs. organic, territory, term).
If a campaign expands, make sure the license matches the new scope.
## 12) Deliverables: stems, instrumentals, cutdowns
Depending on the track and the deal, available deliverables may include:
- Master / Full mix
- Instrumental
- Stems (where available)
- Edits/cutdowns (e.g., 15/30/60 seconds)
Note: This is not commissioned production - these are deliverables provided within a licensing deal, where available.
## 13) Artist releases (bands & solo artists)
Selected tracks may be available for artist releases - by arrangement only.
That’s a different use case than sync/background use. If you want to release a track under your artist name, email us the track link and your plan so scope, credits, and terms stay clear.
## 14) Covers, remixes, sampling, and major changes
Don’t assume these are automatically permitted.
- Covers: Often possible if you record your own version from scratch (no sampling of original audio). If you plan major lyric/melody changes or video usage, contact us first.
- Remix / sampling / heavy edits: Typically require explicit permission and proper clearance. Contact us before proceeding.
## 15) Exclusivity
Exclusivity means that for a defined scope (**media + territory + term**), the track won’t be licensed to others for that same scope.
To check exclusivity, send:
- Track link
- Media (where it runs)
- Territory (where in the world)
- Term (how long)
We’ll confirm availability and options.
## 16) Why do you ask for “territory” and “term”?
Because licenses almost always define:
- Territory = where it can run (e.g., EU, Worldwide)
- Term = how long it can run (e.g., 3 months, 12 months, perpetuity - depending on the model)
It protects both sides: you get certainty, and it prevents conflicting uses.
## 17) Do I need to credit you?
It depends on the deal/partner. In many advertising and social uses, credits are uncommon; in film/TV, credits or cue sheets may apply. If a credit is required, it will be stated in the license or agreed in writing.
## 18) What if YouTube/Meta/platforms place a claim?
Claims can happen even with properly licensed music due to automated systems. Keep:
- the license/receipt/confirmation from the partner
- the track link and license details
If you need help, email:
project link + track link + platform + screenshot/claim ID.
## 19) Can you hold a track while we decide?
Availability is generally first cleared, first confirmed.
If you need a time-limited hold, ask and we’ll confirm what’s possible.
## 20) How fast is the process?
Standard licensing via partners is often quick (browse → choose license → checkout).
Special cases (exclusivity, expanded rights, additional deliverables) require coordination.
## 21) What should I email so we don’t go back and forth?
Send:
- Track link(s)
- Intended use (film/ad/trailer/podcast/etc.)
- Territory
- Term
- Optional: whether exclusivity is required
- Deadline (if you have one)
Email: management@deshima-music.com
## 22) Can the music be used for AI training?
No - unless a written agreement explicitly permits it.
## 23) Legal note
This FAQ is general information, not legal advice. The controlling terms are the specific license terms of the partner platform and/or any written agreement.
